Job Description

Overview:

Our Behavioral Specialist, as part of the camp team, works to support the wellbeing of camp staff members to set them up for success to fulfill their job duties. They support campers and staff members with common MESH+ needs. As a part of our care team, they will report to the Community Engagement & Registrar Director to provide support to staff members and campers. The Behavioral Specialist provides an atmosphere of respect, acceptance and caring for campers and staff members, and above all, contributes to the safety of all individuals at camp.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides support to frontline summer staff for camper MESH+ (mental, emotional, social health) so they can be safe, supported, connected and contributing.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
  • Reports directly to the Community Engagement and Registrar Director.
  • Works closely with the Resident Camp Director, Day Camp Director, and care team as needed to support campers and frontline staff members.
  • Lives in either yurt, or glamping tent accommodations.
  • Keeps accurate documentation of support provided.
  • Understands, complies with, and promotes salient risk management standard operating procedures, policies, and guidelines as indicated by the Y of Northern Colorado.
  • Understands, complies with, and promotes the standards for residential camps set by the state of Colorado, American Camp Association, and any other applicable regulating bodies.
  • Maintains protected health information as appropriate.
  • Models’ relationship-building skills, and MESH (mental, emotional, social health) skills for campers and staff.
  • Problem solves, communicates, and documents camper behavioral issues as they arise, and passes them off to leadership staff members as needed.
  • Incorporates the mission, philosophy, and 5 core values of the YMCA of Northern Colorado in all communication with participants and staff-members.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of YMCA issues and records.
  • Maintaining friendly, professional relationships with staff, participants, and community members.
  • Practices positive guidance and preventative discipline techniques with natural consequences.
  • Required to attend and complete staff meetings, trainings, and all mandatory licensing required trainings.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attends required abuse risk management training.
  • Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 21 years old.
  • Previous experience in a camp childcare setting required.
  • Prior experience and/or training in behavioral crisis response is highly preferred.
  • High level of comfort in working with individuals using a consultative style.
  • Relevant undergraduate education such as psychology, social work, youth development preferred.
  • Ability to exercise balanced judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions, and to handle difficult or confrontational situations in a calm, consistent and equitable manner.
  • Completion of child abuse prevention, CPR/AED, bloodborne pathogens, CampWell Level 1 training.
